Car Running Cost Calculator

Estimate your monthly and yearly car ownership cost, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, EMI, and depreciation, with one simple calculator.

Use any local fuel price and yearly car costs.
Add all three advanced values to include depreciation in the running cost.

How to Calculate Car Running Cost

This calculator works by adding together all the major monthly car expenses. First, it calculates fuel used by dividing monthly distance by fuel efficiency. Then it multiplies that fuel used by fuel price to get monthly fuel cost.

After that, yearly insurance and maintenance are converted into monthly values by dividing each by 12. If you have a car loan, the monthly EMI is added directly. If you enter purchase price, resale value, and ownership period, the calculator also includes monthly depreciation using this formula:

Depreciation per month = (Car Price - Resale Value) / (Ownership Years × 12)

The final result is your total monthly cost. Yearly cost is monthly cost multiplied by 12, and cost per km is monthly cost divided by the distance driven per month.

Example Calculation

If you drive 1,200 km per month, your car gives 15 km per litre, and fuel costs ₹100 per litre, then your monthly fuel use is 80 litres and fuel cost is ₹8,000.

If yearly insurance is ₹18,000, yearly maintenance is ₹24,000, monthly EMI is ₹12,000, purchase price is ₹9,00,000, resale value is ₹4,50,000, and ownership period is 5 years, monthly depreciation is ₹7,500.

Total monthly running cost becomes ₹29,000. Total yearly cost becomes ₹3,48,000, and cost per km is about ₹24.17.

Tips to Reduce Car Running Cost

  • Drive smoothly and avoid sudden acceleration to improve fuel efficiency.
  • Service your car on time to prevent larger repair bills later.
  • Compare insurance providers each renewal year to lower premiums.
  • Maintain correct tyre pressure to reduce fuel use and tyre wear.
  • Combine short trips when possible to cut unnecessary fuel and maintenance costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cost per km for a car?

Cost per km shows how much each kilometre costs you after adding fuel, insurance, maintenance, EMI, and depreciation if included. It is useful for budgeting, comparing vehicles, or planning travel expenses.

How do I calculate fuel cost?

Divide the distance driven by your car's fuel efficiency to get fuel used. Then multiply that number by fuel price per litre. This gives your total fuel cost for that distance.

What is included in running cost?

Running cost usually includes fuel, regular maintenance, insurance, loan EMI, and depreciation. Some drivers may also track parking, tolls, and cleaning separately.

How to reduce car expenses?

You can reduce car expenses by improving mileage, comparing insurance prices, staying up to date with maintenance, and reducing unnecessary driving. Choosing a fuel-efficient car also helps lower long-term ownership cost.
